What to see near Poggiardo
Sea, villages and baroque minutes from the palace
Where we are
Salento starts from the square
Palazzo Circolone faces Piazza Umberto I, in the centre of Poggiardo: a village of local limestone halfway between the Castro coast and the olive-grove countryside. The sea is 7 km away and the best-known Salento destinations are all within an hour by car.
This guide is what we actually suggest to guests: real driving distances, how to plan half a day and where to stop for something typical to eat.
The stops
Six places worth planning for
Road distances measured from Piazza Umberto I, Poggiardo. Driving times are approximate, traffic excluded.

On the square · on foot
Poggiardo and Palazzo della Cultura
The 18th-century palace you stay in overlooks the village square. Two minutes away, Palazzo della Cultura keeps one of the best-preserved Roman mosaic floors in Salento: a short visit, perfect before dinner.

7 km · 10 minutes
Castro Marina and Zinzulusa Cave
The closest coast: turquoise water, the small harbour and the cliffs below Castro Alta. A little further south, the Zinzulusa Cave can be visited by boat or from the pier, its stalactites looking like washing hung out to dry.
About 20 km · 25 minutes
Torre dell’Orso and Torre Sant’Andrea
The two best-known beaches on the Adriatic coast: pale sand and pine wood at Torre dell’Orso, sea stacks and clear water at Torre Sant’Andrea. Go early in high season, parking fills up.
16 km · 25 minutes
Otranto
The cathedral with its Tree of Life mosaic, the Aragonese castle and the seafront. It is the nearest town with a real historic centre to walk: ideal for an evening.

32 km · 45 minutes
Santa Maria di Leuca
Where Puglia ends: the sanctuary, the monumental waterfall and the sea caves. Worth seeing once, preferably at sunset.

39 km · 40 minutes
Lecce
Lecce baroque, the basilica of Santa Croce, the Roman amphitheatre in the middle of the square. Half a day is enough for the centre, but the pastry shops deserve one more stop.

At the table
Four things to taste
Small things that make Salento recognisable, all within walking distance in the village.
- Pasticciotto
- Shortcrust pastry and custard, best warm from the oven: it is the typical breakfast, though nobody will judge you for having one as a snack.
- Rustico leccese
- Round puff pastry with béchamel, tomato and stringy mozzarella. Eaten while walking, no fork needed.
- Frisella with tomato
- Twice-baked bread soaked in water, with tomato, oil, oregano and a few anchovy fillets: the simplest and most Salento lunch there is.
- Negroamaro
- The local red wine, worth trying as a rosé in summer: fresh, savoury, excellent with fish.
