What to see near Vignacastrisi
The Castro sea, villages and cliffs minutes from the palace
Where we are
A village on the square, the sea around the corner
Palazzo Guglielmo faces Piazza Umberto I, in the centre of Vignacastrisi, a hamlet of Castro in the province of Lecce. We are just over 3 km from the Castro Marina coast and 6 km from Santa Cesarea Terme: the sea is the first thing you reach, but Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca are within half an hour too.
This guide is what we actually suggest to guests: real driving distances, how to plan a day and where to stop for something typical to eat.
The stops
Six places worth planning for
Road distances measured from Piazza Umberto I, Vignacastrisi. Driving times are approximate, traffic excluded.

On foot · in front of the palace
Vignacastrisi and its square
The village revolves around the square and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, with the palace and its citrus garden a few steps away. A short walk through white lanes and small shops, best done in the evening before dinner.

3 km · 6 minutes
Castro and the Zinzulusa Cave
Castro Alta clings to the cliff, with its castle and walls; below, Castro Marina offers the little harbour, swimming spots and seafood restaurants. A little further south, the Zinzulusa Cave can be visited by boat or from the pier: the first stop for anyone who wants the sea five minutes from home.

6 km · 9 minutes
Santa Cesarea Terme
The sulphur-spring spa, the Moorish-style villas on the cliff and the natural pool of Santa Cesarea. The seafront is perfect for a sunset aperitivo, when the sea turns copper.

12 km · 18 minutes
Tricase Porto
A small, quiet harbour among the olive trees, with rocky coves around it and the noble palaces of Tricase nearby. From here the Cipolliane path follows the coast towards Marina di Novaglie.
21 km · 28 minutes
Otranto
The cathedral with its Tree of Life mosaic, the Aragonese castle and the seafront. It is the nearest town with a major historic centre: ideal for an evening or half a day of culture.
28 km · 40 minutes
Santa Maria di Leuca
Where Puglia ends: the sanctuary, the monumental waterfall and the sea caves visited by boat. Worth seeing once, better at sunset, perhaps staying for dinner at the harbour.
A sample day
How we would plan the day
Morning
Sea at Castro
Breakfast in the garden, then a 6-minute drive to Castro Marina. A swim off the rocks, a walk around the harbour and, if there is room, a visit to the Zinzulusa Cave.
Afternoon
Santa Cesarea or Tricase
A slow afternoon among the villas of Santa Cesarea Terme or on the coves of Tricase Porto, with an ice cream and a walk along the coastal path.
Evening
Vignacastrisi
Back to the square for an aperitivo under the portico and dinner. Tomorrow, if you like, Otranto or Leuca: both under 40 minutes.
At the table
Four things to taste
Small things that make Salento recognisable, all within easy reach in the village and in Castro.
- Pasticciotto
- Shortcrust pastry and custard, best warm from the oven: it is the typical breakfast, though nobody will judge you for having one as a snack.
- Rustico leccese
- Round puff pastry with béchamel, tomato and stringy mozzarella. Eaten while walking, no fork needed.
- Frisella with tomato
- Twice-baked bread soaked in water, with tomato, oil, oregano and a few anchovy fillets: the simplest and most Salento lunch there is.
- Castro fish
- Sea urchins, octopus and blue fish in the restaurants of Castro Marina harbour: if you want a seafood dinner, that is the right area.
